About the event
The Knowledge-Share Communities (#university&emmahub) is an exclusive, unconventional un-conference and workshop project initiated and organised by the University of Warsaw – Faculty of Journalism, Information, and Book Studies together with The European Media Management Association, one of the most recognizable international organization associating leading researchers and practitioners of media and media management. This event is also held under the honorary patronage of Mr. Rafał Trzaskowski, the mayor of the capital city of Warsaw.
The Knowledge-Share Communities (#university&emmahub) takes place on November 16-17, 2023, at the University of Warsaw. The choice of the city and the date is not accidental, as it harmonises perfectly with the event’s objectives and concept.
Our goals
The Knowledge-Share Communities (#university&emmahub) aims to build thematic networks and experiment with new forms of knowledge exchange. Apart from traditional forms of knowledge sharing, we would like to experiment with workshops, pitching sessions, and community events dedicated to a specific theme.
On one hand, we would like to develop strong relations with the media management practitioners, and on the other – to introduce our association to non-emma member countries. Additionally, we are anxious to activate emma’s community between existing events (summer doctoral school and conference), and to implement new forms of academic collaboration within the community, also by initiating cooperation with colleagues and universities from emma and outside emma. The event may also become a forum for new research ideas and an arena for new, not only media-related, stakeholders.
Our topic
The major research idea is to study the European media’s reaction to the war in Ukraine viewed through the prism of media management and media economics. Together participants will seek to answer questions about how media companies adapted their production, distribution, pricing, promotion, and branding in response to the war. Did they modify their marketing activities? Were these changes driven by institutional motivation or were they grassroots initiatives? Were these modifications permanent and were there any notable differences or similarities between countries?
We want to compare our approaches and perspectives, and thanks to group work, develop new research ideas and initiate plans for future cooperation between researchers representing various parts of Europe.
Please, see the program, to know more about the event’s scenario, including formal and informal activities (we have planned a variety of surprises).
Our participants
We cordially invite researchers from our Association, Ukraine and countries bordering on or located in close proximity to it. However, we must underline that the meeting is not intended to be a mass event. Instead, we would like to meet in a narrower yet diverse group to share experiences, research and observations.
So far, we can confirm the participation of scholars from Ukraine (universities from Lviv, Kyiv, Odessа, Dnipro, Mariupol, and Kharkiv), Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Portugal, and Finland.
As you can see, The Knowledge-Share Communities (#university&emmahub) boldly cross borders, fully implementing the ideas of integration, community, openness and inclusivity. We believe that each of its participants has an opportunity to establish or expand close professional and other relationships with a greatly diverse scientific community.
Although the event is not a mass one, there is a possibility to join us! Please, check all possibilities.
Why November 16-17, 2023?
November 16 marks the International Day of Tolerance. In Warsaw, this year’s celebrations will be dedicated to refugees from Ukraine who have been forced to flee their country due to the war.
Why Warsaw?
Apart from the fact that we initiated the project, the choice of Warsaw as the host city for this holds great significance for several reasons. Firstly, Warsaw is a city that emerged from the ruins after WWII and has since blended tradition with modernity, inspiring action and promoting creative solutions to important issues. Secondly, Warsaw has often been the first stop on the way of Ukrainian citizens to safe places outside the war zones. Lastly, Varsovians have faced the challenge of accommodating hundreds of thousands of war refugees, providing them with medical assistance, legal aid, and refuge, side by side. These factors highlight Warsaw’s unique position and experience, making it an ideal location for this event.
What’s next?
The Knowledge-Share Communities (#university&emmahub) will be officially announced at this year’s emma conference at the University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain.
After the event, we will provide all the participants with conclusions developed during the workshops and post them on the emma and project’s website. Additionally, we will have our discussion panel at the emma 2024 conference.
We are also considering publishing a Special Issue in a prestigious international journal (with the papers started or developed during the event).
